Over 30,000 New Voters Added in a Single Day as Nepal Integrates National ID Data for Voter Registration

Nepal’s Election Commission (EC) recorded a major surge in voter enrollment on Wednesday, adding over 30,000 new voters in a single day, following the rollout of its new voter registration system linked to the National Identity Card (NID) database.

According to official data, by 8 p.m. Wednesday, the total number of new voter registrations reached 239,940, with 30,373 individuals registering that day alone. The EC has set November 16 (Kartik 30) as the final deadline for voter registration.

New Registration System Goes Live

Starting Thursday, the Election Commission began incorporating citizen data directly from the National Identity Card system, enabling individuals with a valid National ID number to register without physically visiting local election offices.

The move aims to simplify the process and reach citizens residing outside their home districts or abroad.

“All technical preparations and system testing were completed overnight to ensure a smooth transition,” said Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, confirming that the integration was successfully launched on schedule.

Officials anticipate that linking the NID database will significantly accelerate the registration process in the days leading up to the deadline.

Coordination Between EC and Civil Registration Department

The system launch followed a high-level meeting on Wednesday between Prime Minister Sushila Karki and top EC officials, including Acting Chief Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari, Commissioners Dr. Janaki Kumari Tuladhar and Sagun Shumsher Rana, along with senior staff members.

During the meeting, the EC briefed the Prime Minister on the ongoing preparations for the upcoming House of Representatives elections and outlined the new mechanism for NID-based voter registration.

Namraj Ghimire, Director General of the Department of National ID and Civil Registration, assured full cooperation from his department, stating that biometric data collected for National ID distribution will be shared securely with the Election Commission for voter verification and registration purposes.

Growing Voter Turnout Ahead of Deadline

With just days remaining until the November 16 deadline, officials report that the number of new voter registrations has been rising steadily.
Extended working hours, enhanced staffing, and the introduction of dual shifts — from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. — have been implemented to manage the increasing demand.

The EC expects total new registrations to surpass initial projections as more citizens utilize the simplified digital process enabled by the National ID integration.

Background

Nepal’s Election Commission has been modernizing its electoral infrastructure ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for March 5, 2026.
