Terror Blast Near Delhi’s Iconic Landmark: Plot to Strike Six Locations on December 6 Unearthed

NEW DELHI — Security agencies investigating a recent car explosion near a major historical site in New Delhi have uncovered what appears to be a large-scale terror plot targeting six locations in the National Capital Region (NCR) on December 6, a date linked to a past communal flashpoint. 

The Blast

The explosion occurred in heavy evening traffic near the gate of a metro station adjacent to the landmark. At least eight people were killed and 19 or more injured when the vehicle detonated, igniting a fire and damaging multiple nearby vehicles and buildings. The incident has been officially classified as a terror attack. 

The Suspected Plot

Investigators say the attack may have been part of a five-phase plan allegedly hatched by a “white-collar” terror module linked to a proscribed militant group.
The phases outlined by sources include:

Phase 1: Formation of the specialised module with professional members.
Phase 2: Procurement of raw materials and ammunition from sites in the NCR periphery.
Phase 3: Manufacture of chemical IEDs and reconnaissance of target sites.
Phase 4: Distribution of assembled devices among operatives.

Phase 5 (Final): Execution of coordinated bombings across six to seven locations in the NCR. According to the probe, the original target date was earlier, but delays forced the shift to December 6.

Explosives, Modus Operandi & Linkages

In conjunction with the blast investigation, security agencies recovered approximately 2,900 kg of explosive material during raids in a district neighbouring the capital. The explosive composition is believed to include ammonium nitrate and detonators. Preliminary findings suggest that the car used in the blast had been stationed for hours and that CCTV footage and forensic evidence are under detailed review. 

Officials report that the module’s operatives included medical professionals and university-affiliated individuals, marking a shift from conventional terror networks to better-educated cadres. Further, investigators are probing possible international linkages and cross-border coordination through encrypted communication channels. 

Security Response & Broader Implications

In the wake of the explosion, the capital region has been placed on high alert. Major transit hubs, historical sites, and urban checkpoints have enhanced security protocols. The timing of the planned attacks—on a date of symbolic significance—raises concerns about an attempt to stoke communal tensions and magnify impact.

Given the scale of materials recovered and the professional nature of the module, experts warn that the incident may represent an evolution in terror tactics: highly trained operatives, large-scale explosive caches, and coordinated multi-site plans.
